torsion springs and spiral springs can be used with bi-directional motions given the same spiral direction.

Question Andre

Hello, I would like to know if torsion springs and spiral springs can be used with bi-directional motions (clockwise and anti-clockwise) given the same spiral direction.

Is the stiffness the same in both directions? Is there a limit in the deflection angle to achieve a symmetrical behaviour?

thanks

Answer Mr. Spring

Thank you for your inquiry.

Torsion springs can be used in both directions, while spring springs can be used only in the winding direction.
The spring constant of a torsion spring is the same in both the retracting and rewinding directions by design.
A torsion spring is twisted at the same angle from free time in the unwinding and rewinding directions,
The twist in the unwinding direction is less favorable in terms of stress than the twist in the winding direction.
Therefore, when designing, please refer to the stress in the unwinding direction.
