Calculating force of springs in series

Question Bruce McCallum

Hi, I have a number of springs working together in Series and I am struggling to calculate the total forces, I need some help!
Basically I have 3x different stacked springs where they are all at the same F/L but then move together +/-11mm (either in compression or tension but not all at the same time as 2x face one way the other is opposite).
I need to add a 4th spring (always under compression) such that there is always a minimum force of 50N at -11mm travel (assume that 4th spring rate is 4N/mm).
Then calculating out
– minimum force of the 4th spring at -11mm thru to +11 travel
– The total closing force the ‘system’ from -11mm/50N thru +11mm travel

An xlsx based answer would be superb!

Answer Tokai Spring

Dear McCallum,

Thank you for your question!
If it is okay for you, could you please send us the layout/sketch of the design that you are considering?
In addition, in the table you provided, the force is 50N at +11mm. However, in your question, the force is 50N at -11mm. Could you explain this as well?

Best regards,
