Question Spring Newbie

What kind of inspection method is there to confirm that the tempering process is successful?
Also, are the inspection methods for compression springs and extension springs different?
Please tell me whether it can be confirmed only by the dimensions. Or, can it be confirmed only by destructive testing methods and microscopic confirmation?

Answer Tokai Spring

Spring Newbie, thank you for posting!

If you use a simple method, you can check the tempering process by checking the appearance color (temper color)! Generally, it has a bluish appearance.
In addition, in order to confirm whether the strain (residual stress) generated by winding processing etc. is removed, there is a residual stress measurement method by X-ray, but I think it is difficult to confirm every time after tempering. (Recently, there seems to be some inspection equipment that simply measures residual stress) I think that the same confirmation method can be applied to compression springs and extension springs.
By the way, it is important to control the heating temperature and time for proper tempering!
