Question Hepo 2006/12/15(Fri) 10:18
Nice to meet you.
I have a question about compression springs. Assuming that there are two springs with exactly the same material and performance (referred to as A and B), one end of A is fixed (to a wall, etc.) and the other end is free. Then the force is applied from the free side to compress the spring.
For B, the center of the spring is fixed and both ends are free.
Then the force is applied from both ends.
Here, both A and B will be compressed and shortened to the same length. For example, each should be shortened to about 60% of its free length. In this case, if the force is removed for both A and B, is there a difference regarding the amount of time that the springs return to the original free length (or are fully extended)?

Thank you for writing to us, Hepo!
Since the energy stored in A and B is the same, in this case, if the distance to return to the original length of A is xmm, B will return to the original free length of x/2 at both ends. It is expected that B, with a smaller return distance, will bound back faster.
