Question Kashimashi

The load in the test for the allowable stress of compression and extension springs is “tensile strength of material x coefficient” and is written as a coefficient. However, no such coefficient can be found in JIS for torsion coil springs. Is it only possible to extract it from the allowable bending stress diagram?

Answer Tokai Spring

Thank you for writing to us, Kashimashi!
The allowable stress of the torsion springs is described in the explanation of JIS B 2709.
* In the explanation, the coefficient obtained by multiplying the tensile strength as the allowable bending stress is 0.8 for piano wire, hard steel wire, oil tempered wire, and 0.75 for stainless steel wire.
