Question Spring Newbie 2006/11/18(Sat) 7:57
What is the major difference between “spring steel” such as SUP10 and “oil-tempered wire”? I couldn’t figure it out even if I looked it up on the Internet.

Thank you for writing to us!
The materials for springs are roughly divided into (1) materials that are premised on being heated in the spring manufacturing process and hot-formed into a spring shape and (2) materials that have already been tempered to have the mechanical properties required for springs, especially tensile strength and hardness, before the spring forming process.
Spring steel such as SUP10 corresponds to ①, and oil-tempered material corresponds to ②. ① are used for large flat springs and compression springs that have a relatively large wire diameter and are tempered after hot coiling, and ② can be used to manufacture springs with small wire diameters that can be cold-formed. They are materials that have been tempered in advance.
