Question Spring Newbie 2019/3/25(Mon) 10:53
This is my first time posting here.
It is known that when a cylindrical compression spring is compressed vertically, the load center of the spring does not coincide with the axial center of the cylinder. Is there any relation between the amount of deviation of load direction and the number of coils?
Example: with xx.0 coils, the amount of deviation is small; with xx.5 coils, the amount of deviation is large, etc.

Spring Newbie,
Thank you for your contribution! It is thought that the load deviation in the axial direction is easier to stabilize in xx.5 coils than in xx.0 coils. At our company, we sometimes measure the lateral load during compression with a testing machine, and we know that the load direction on springs with xx.5 coils is closer to the center of the axis. The deviation of the load axis cannot be unequivocally stated because multiple factors work in a complex manner, but it is better to set the number of active coils to xx.5 to balance them.
