Question Spring Newbie 2008/1/24(Thu) 10:43
I purchased a compression coil spring that is available on the market. Is it possible to calculate the spring constant of that spring? In this case, only the material and dimensions of the spring are known.

Thank you for writing to us!
The spring constant can be calculated from the material, wire diameter, coil diameter, and the active number of coils. Regarding the basic calculation formula of the spring constant, we also introduce it in the following page on our company’s website, so please check it! https://www.tokaibane.com/en/spring-design/compression-springs-formulas#Section1

I have a question. I need a design for compression spring, it should deflect 20 mm if we put a load of 200 grams, the free length is 60mm, spring outer diameter 8mm. I need the thickness of coil wire and other specimens…

Dear Gangadhar,
Thank you for your question. Please find our design proposal below.
– Material: SUS304-WPB
– Dimensions: Wire diameter φ0.3 x Coil mean diameter 7.7 x Free length 60 x Number of active coils 15.5 x Total number of coils 17.5 Clockwise
(Outer diameter: 8.0 mm, Inner diameter: 7.4 mm)
– Spring constant: 0.001kgf/mm
– When the load is 0.02kgf → Spring’s deflection is 20.0mm (reference)
・ No grinding on both ends
・ Dimensional inspection is carried out (no load test)
・ No squareness measurement
If you have any other questions, please let us know. In addition, for your future reference, if you need to design a simple coil spring, you can use our coil spring design software online too (https://www.tokaibane.com/en/cl/compression-spring-calculator/)
