Question MH 2008/2/9(Sat) 15:15
We are considering using wave washers to prevent the loosening of screws (M14X1).
Question (1) First of all, is it common to use wave washers to prevent loosening of the screws? (In the case of this screw size, the outer diameter of the standard spring washer is quite large. Also, the spring washer cannot give a uniform reaction force on the circumference.)
Question (2) Specifically, I am thinking of using a nominal size (according to JASO F302) of 16 (inner diameter x outer diameter x plate thickness x free height: 17X23X0.3X2.5) or 18 (same: 19X25X0.3X2.5). How much compression should be used to obtain the maximum reaction force within the range that does not exceed the elastic limit? (Also taking into consideration the safety factor.)

Thank you for writing!
Regarding question (1): Wave washers are often used to prevent loosening of screws. Wave washers do not damage the seating surface, even if the load at the time of close contact is increased, so they are suitable for tightening with a high load on the seating surface of soft materials such as light alloys.
Regarding question (2), in calculation, nominal size 16 is compressed by 0.5 mm and nominal size 18 is compressed by 0.45 mm.
* The plate thickness of nominal size 18 is 0.4 mm.
