Question Kurihiro

My name is Kurihiro, I often use the information from this website for reference. Please tell me more about the “measurement of lateral force of springs”.
I know that there is a specific measuring instrument, but if you know a way to measure it easily (and cheaply) (for example using strain gauges), please let me know. I also need the instrument to be easy to be used on the go.

Answer Tokai Spring

The lateral force of the compression springs can be measured by combining multiple uniaxial load cells, and using a 6 axis load cell is a simple method, and it is easy to handle various mounting conditions.
We have a special measuring instrument for this called “thrust tester” that measures such lateral force. However, this measuring instrument cannot be easily used on the go… (Because it is big)

Answer Yui

Please tell me the formula for calculating the lateral force of the springs.

Answer Tokai Spring

It is difficult to give a concise formula for calculating the lateral force of springs.
Recently, by using 3D analysis, it has become possible to evaluate it with relatively high accuracy. Depending on the conditions, the difference between calculation and real values of the actual springs will be large, so we recommend measuring the real products to suppress defects in actual use. There is a book called “Spring” by Maruzen Co., Ltd. in which the details are described, please refer to it.
