Alternative material for SUP6

SWOSC

Question jun

The other day, I received an order of a part from a customer, but the drawing is from 1975, and the material used is SUP6, which is currently not available in the market anymore and very difficult to get. Therefore, the production team requested “SWOSC-B has the same properties, so please use it.” However, I could not find a document stating the basis that the mechanical properties of both were the same, and I am in trouble right now. Isn’t there a problem with using SWOSC-B as an alternative material to SUP6? I want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each. Thank you in advance.

Answer Tokai Spring

For springs with a wire diameter of φ12 or less, SWOSM-B is equivalent to SUP6, but this material is not available on the market either.
However, the SWOSC-B material is on the market.
Silicon manganese steel is changed to silicon chrome steel, the mechanical properties have a large tensile strength value and generally the fatigue life is improved.
As a disadvantage, it is a little harder, so it is not suitable for crafts.
Thank you for your inquiry!
