Tokai Spring Industries possesses unique manufacturing technology based on many years of experience of delivering products to customers in the leisure equipment industry. Our anti-corrosion coil springs are used in applications where they are exposed to corrosion such as salt damage.

Problems and challenges

The customer was considering using a large compression coil spring for the driving unit of a large Ferris wheel. Since the Ferris wheel was to be installed near the coast, it had to be rust-proof to prevent corrosion due to salt damage, and it had to be maintenance-free for 10 years.

Solution

The required characteristics of the spring were that it should be rustproof enough to withstand outdoor installation near the coast, that the paint should not peel off even after repeated use, and that the spring should continue to demonstrate original performance without degradation even after more than 10 years of use. We have been researching corrosion prevention methods that can withstand harsh operating environments, and have selected the optimal rust prevention treatment based on our know-how. In addition, we studied and proposed a spring design that can maintain the spring characteristics even under repeated use conditions.

Results

Springs that meet the required specifications have been installed in the driving unit, and these springs have been working as designed for 10 years without any maintenance. The springs were planned to be replaced after 10 years. However, the springs that have completed their role are still in a stet allowing their continuous use, proving that there are no problems in both rust prevention and function.
